INTRODUCTION
Voldsløkka Skole, located in Oslo, features a modern and versatile auditorium known as Voldsløkka Scene. This cultural space is equipped with a telescopic seating system, allowing for a total of 307 chairs, and is designed to accommodate a wide range of events, from performances to conferences. As part of a comprehensive redevelopment, SIAP Acoustics was tasked with enhancing the acoustics to meet the venue’s diverse needs. With its unique approach to active acoustics, SIAP transformed the auditorium into a dynamic and adaptable venue, ensuring optimal sound quality for every type of event.
THE CHALLENGE
The primary challenge was the auditorium’s natural reverberation time (RT), which measured only 0.6 seconds—significantly shorter than the intended 0.9 seconds. This discrepancy did not align with the mandatory Norwegian acoustics standard NS 8178:2014, which specifies required RT parameters for different types of spaces. Without adjusting the RT, the auditorium’s acoustics would fall short of the expected standards and fail to meet the performance needs for various events. The solution required implementing a range of presets, from 0.6 seconds to 1.8 seconds (Symfoniorkester), to meet the acoustics demands for both speech and musical performances.
THE RESULT
The implementation of the Mark V processor with tailored presets enabled Voldsløkka Scene to meet both the desired acoustic parameters and the required standards of NS 8178:2014. The RT was optimized to deliver high-quality sound for various types of events, and the integration of surround sound options further enhanced the venue’s adaptability. The system’s versatility ensures that the auditorium now serves as a multipurpose space, capable of hosting a wide range of activities while providing exceptional acoustic performance.
The successful integration of this advanced acoustic technology has transformed Voldsløkka Skole’s auditorium into a high-performing, flexible venue that will continue to meet the needs of its users for years to come, all while adhering to the Norwegian acoustics standard. Special thanks to Benum Norway AS for their outstanding work in building and setting up the entire AAS system, and to COWI for their valuable support.
